Charlotte Lucas Paragraph

Charlotte Lucas is an important character to display the contrast between herself and Elizabeth through the idea of marriage in the book, Pride and Prejudice. Two men of wealth proposed Elizabeth. She pointed out to her family and friends she believes marriage is for love and wishes for a marriage not for social status, but for who she wishes to marry. When Mr Collins proposed a second time, she said, “I am perfectly happy in my refusal … you could not make me happy…” After this refusal, Mr Collins met Charlotte and when he proposed, she said yes. Marriage is what Charlotte has been waiting for and to be asked by a man of Mr Collin’s profession and wealth, it was beyond anything she could imagine. When she tells Elizabeth, she says, “I am not romantic ... I ask only for a comfortable home” explaining why she accepted the proposal. She has accepted her family status, as they do not have good connections or large amounts of money. Charlotte Lucas is important in the book, Pride and Prejudice as she creates contrast between herself and Elizabeth about marriage.
